QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Bernabest Food Products Inc., the company behind popular food kiosk chain Siomai House, has transitioned its facilities to 100% renewable energy through a supply agreement with the Ayala group’s retail electricity unit, ACEN RES.

Under the agreement, Bernabest’s facilities will be powered entirely by energy sourced from ACEN’s diverse renewable portfolio, which includes solar, wind, and geothermal plants.

Engr. Sheila Mina, Vice President and Head of Account Management at ACEN RES, welcomed Bernabest to their growing list of sustainability partners.

“We are honored to power Bernabest Food Products Inc. as they take this significant step toward sustainability,” Mina said. “We commend the company’s leadership for their unwavering commitment to a greener future while working hard to achieve their business goals. We hope this partnership inspires other enterprises to see that business growth and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.”

The supply deal was secured through the government’s Retail Aggregation Program (RAP).

Managed by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the RAP is a scheme that allows electricity consumers with smaller individual power requirements to pool their consumption. By aggregating their demand to meet the average monthly threshold of 100 kilowatts, these businesses qualify as “contestable customers.”

This status grants them the power of choice, allowing them to switch from the captive market (distribution utilities) to a retail electricity suppliers (RES) like ACEN RES. This enables participating companies to negotiate competitive rates and, in cases like this, specifically opt for renewable energy sources.

For Bernabest, which manages several known food brands alongside Siomai House, the move marks a pivot toward environmentally conscious manufacturing.

“At Bernabest, our goal has always been to provide quality food to Filipino families, but we believe that quality also means operating responsibly,” said Edwin Bernabe, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bernabest Food Products Inc. “Partnering with ACEN RES to utilize 100% renewable energy allows us to reduce our carbon footprint significantly. It is a gift to our community and a promise that as we grow, we remain committed to protecting the environment.”

About Bernabest Food Products, Inc.

Bernabest Food Products Inc. is the company behind the famous Siomai House and Empanada Especiale. The Bernabest commits to serving only the best and nothing less—hence, Bernabest. Being in the food and beverage industry, Bernabest’s commitment to customer satisfaction is paramount, which is why the company is primed to maintain the high quality and strict implementation of standards in product processes as approved by the FDA, HACCP, and GMP (AAA) certified by the NMIS.

The humble beginnings of the Bernabest can be traced back to a house in Dagat-dagatan, Caloocan City where the first empanada was made. The family’s matriarch, who they fondly call Lola Mama, owns the special empanada recipe which she would lovingly prepare during family gatherings. This gave birth to their kith and kin venture that started in 2001 when a modest booth for Empanada Especiale was established near the old Caloocan City Hall. A year later, another booth was opened at North Mall, Caloocan LRT Station.

An unforeseen event emanated from the North Mall booth, which led to a brainstorming session by the family. They had to get another space to prevent competition from coming in. As such, they needed a new product that will have no negative effect on Empanada Especiale. From this, the now famous Siomai House was born.

In 2004, the very first Siomai House outlet was established in North Mall, Caloocan LRT Station. Today, Siomai House has already captured the hearts of Filipinos from different walks of life—establishing the brand as the one of the most popular siomai brands in the country.
